Most Native American tribes did practice some sort of slavery before the Europeans introduced African slavery into North America. But the Native Americans did not buy and sell captives, though they sometimes exchanged enslaved people with other tribes, just in peace gestures or to trade their own members back. The enslaved Natives varied form tribe to tribe. Sometimes captives were adopted into tribes to replace killed warriors. Other tribes practiced slavery on own tribal members who had committed a crime. But in these cases the status was only temporary until the member had finished their sentence. Some of the slave-owning tribes were for example Klamath, Comanche, the Pawnee and Creek.
